Washington, DC – Oceana recently announced that Sydney Davis has joined its board of directors. An artist, philanthropist and community volunteer, Davis is also a passionate conservationist whose diverse talents are complemented by her extensive experience on Wall Street.

“I join Oceana’s board of directors with equal amounts of pride and hope – pride in recognizing that I am joining an organization that has an impressive track record of achieving measurable policy victories for the world’s oceans, and hope for the inevitable victories that lay ahead, victories of which I will be fortunate enough to play a role in achieving,” said Davis. “Oceana’s board of directors is made up of a diverse group of bright and talented people from all over the world and I’m thrilled to be lending my skills and experience to such a worthy cause.”

A Georgetown University graduate, Sydney previously worked for Price Waterhouse focusing on financial institutions and not-for-profit organizations. She took her expertise to the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) where she worked as Manager of Investor Relations.  During her tenure, she designed and implemented the institution’s first corporate industry training program for over 2,000 employees nationwide.

In light of her financial background, Davis will add depth and expertise to a team that has already helped Oceana stand out among other non-profits because of its sound financial management. For three years straight, Oceana has been awarded the coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management, placing it in the top 13% of charities rated by the organization.

“Oceana’s board is like the Philadelphia Phillies this year: We have this winning roster and every new player counts. Sydney Davis adds such a high level of expertise to our already impressive lineup that will certainly help ensure future victories – and victories are what we’re all about” said Oceana’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpless. “Any board would be thrilled to have someone of Sydney’s caliber, so I can’t even begin to describe how lucky we feel to welcome her to our team.”

The board of directors, a diverse group of accomplished individuals from all over the world, is Oceana’s governing body. The directors are responsible for establishing organizational strategy, budgets, and the direction of Oceana’s campaigns. In her new role, Davis will join members of the board that include actors Ted Danson and Sam Waterston, as well as internationally respected fisheries scientist Dr. Daniel Pauly, marine biologist and trustee of the Oak Foundation Dr. Kristian Parker, and documentary filmmaker Susan Rockefeller.

Since 2001, Oceana’s directors have taken a science-based approach to creating policy changes around the world. To date, Oceana has protected over 1.2 million square miles of ocean habitat and countless sea creatures like dolphins, sharks, and endangered sea turtles. Most recently, Oceana negotiated the prohibition of all destructive trawling in Belize, helped pass the 2010 Shark Conservation Act and was a crucial player in defeating the construction of 2 coal-fired power plants in Northern Chile.
