ENSURING OCEAN-BASED FISH FARMING IS DONE RESPONSIBLY

The Campaign

Ocean-based fish farming – a type of aquaculture – is inherently risky. Not only can it devastate seafloor habitats and nearby waters, but these farms also often use vast amounts of pesticides and chemicals to prevent disease and parasites.

What many don’t realize is that many species of finfish, like salmon, are carnivores and require feed inputs – often fishmeal fish oil sourced from wild ocean fisheries. Fish waste and uneaten feed pollutes the water and can lead to harmful algal blooms. Mass fish die-offs, escapes, and sea lice outbreaks have been reported all over the world, wreaking havoc on surrounding ecosystems. Since 2000, there have been several thousand documented finfish farming incidents around the world.

That’s why Oceana is campaigning to ensure that ocean-based fish farming is done responsibly.
