Margot Stiles

Chief of Strategy
Oceana Staff

Margot currently leads a team offering strategy development and coaching to Oceana staff in Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Peru and the Philippines.  In this work she draws on 11 years of experience at Oceana and 17 years of experience in ocean conservation, science and policy.  She also leads Oceana’s initial research, recruiting and fundraising to launch new country offices.

Margot helped open Oceana’s office in Belize in 2009 and played a key role in the 2006 reorganization of Oceana’s Chile office, after originally joining Oceana as US-based scientist on responsible fishing and seafood fraud issues. As Oceana’s representative in the southeast United States, she worked closely with government and private sector to protect 23,000 square miles of deep sea corals from North Carolina to Florida. While working in Belize, she helped Oceana negotiate a nationwide ban and buy-out of trawl vessels to protect the Belize barrier reef.

Prior to Oceana, Margot worked for Seattle Audubon, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy. She is a native English speaker, is fluent in Spanish and understands Portuguese. Margot earned her M.S. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and B.A. in biology from Vassar College.  She is an avid whitewater kayaker and enjoys tending her garden.
